Imminent Decimation by AdrienCGD Imminent Decimation by AdrienCGD
A piece of space art I started on 9/21/2011 while trying to make a comeback to DeviantART. I ended up taking much longer than originally planned, but here it is. I have about 6 other WIPs that are almost finished and ready to upload!

In this one I wanted to make a more earthlike atmosphere which is why I decided to use an earth texture which can be found here: [link]

The colors are more saturated and the feel is more soft and round to this one because I wanted to try something new and easier on the eyes for once. I feel as though it took away from the impression of doom unfortunately since the feel is too "happy" when really it is a scene of a double catastrophe that will imminently end all of mankind. The comet was inspired by Armageddon since I had just watched the movie again, and the emanating sun because of this video that explained in detail how the sun would grow in the future and engulf half of the system before it would shrink back in the a white dwarf and possible a black hole due to its density that will have amassed by the time it runs out of fuel.

Tell me what you think!

The wallpaper pack comes with the following resolutions:

1280x720
1280x800
1440x900
1600x900
1680x1050

I LOVE space! It's great to see all the amazing colors. The thing I love about this picture is Earth though. I've never seen it like this and you've made me fall in love with it. You've made it look extraordinary like the rest of the galaxy.

When I look at this, I see a vivid reality told by the colors, and it is captivating!
That, and as a Science-Fiction writer, I appreciate the creativity put into spacescapes :)

Thank you for the comment, I really appreciate the support! I'm happy to read that my art is appreciated by a sci-fi writer! Sci-fi stories and illustrations always made a great combo! They tell a story in two perspectives that work amazingly well together!

Hehe thanks for the compliment. Though the real colors are actually pitch black at night. it's only when you get close to the planet that you see some blue lights from the atmosphere. But that's why we can use our creativity and software to add colors and other elements into our space art :)

I love the vibrant colors! This is a beautiful image. Though I feel the need to correct you on your astronomy facts because I'm a nerd, and that's what we do.

Our sun does not have enough mass to turn into a black hole. Only Supergiant stars have that capacity, and it is only when they explode in a supernova at the end of their life (and even then most turn into Neutron Stars, not Black Holes).

Our sun is a typical star that can be found in most places of the universe. When our sun runs low on fuel, the core will collapse, and the outer layers will expand outwards until our star becomes a Red Giant, which WILL swallow up most of our solar system.

Eventually, over time, the outer layers will disperse to become a planetary nebula and then the sun's core will become a white dwarf star.

Sorry for the impromptu astronomy lesson, but sometimes I can't help myself. XD

Hehe gotta love nerds!

Thanks for the input though, I really needed someone to clarify this since a few people pointed out that I didn't have my facts completely straight. I fell aloof regarding the sun lacking enough mass to turn into a black hole.

But what exactly are novas and what do they become? And what's a supernova exactly?

I know, right?

Supernova's, as they are known, are the death's of massive stars called supergiants. They are one stage in a supergiant's death.

A supergiant's core is made up of heavier materials then other star's cores, such as that of our sun. Star's cores are typically layered, and the heaviest materials will be at the very center of the core.

Stars create their own energy by a process called nuclear fusion, which takes lighter elements, starting with hydrogen, and fuses them into heavier elements, such as helium, and so on and so forth.

In supergiant stars, the reason why they explode brilliantly in death is because, once the fusion process reaches the stage of iron, the extra energy that is usually produced to keep the star running, is absorbed by the iron. Therefore, the core collapses and then implodes outwards in a radiant display called a supernova.

From there, depending on the mass of the core (even supergiants differ in mass), the literal end can be one of two things. If the core has enough mass (usually between 1.6 to 2.5 solar masses), it will turn into a black hole. However, if the core has less, then it will form a neutron star. ;)
